Planes!

On March 3rd of this year, I constructed a plane with my friend and partner, Suchitra.This picture demonstrates what me and Suchitra and the rest of our class was doing in our experiment. There is chairs with strings attached and the little planes are on the string. I am not in this picture, but I think it very well demonstrates what the experiment was about.
We made this plane out of two Popsicle sticks, a huge straw, a little straw, a staple, and a propeller piece. First, me and Suchitra sanded the Popsicle sticks so that they were both even and would fit into an item that we used later. Then, we cut the huge straw in two and we hole punched each part of the huge straw on only one end and slid the little straw into the holes. After that, me and Suchitra squished the other ends of the huge straw between the Popsicle sticks and stapled the Popsicle sticks shut. As soon as that was done, me and Suchitra took the propeller piece and stuck it into one side of the two squished Popsicle sticks. On the other side of the sticks, we stuck a piece with a little tab hanging out of the end, we put a rubber band on the tab and on a hook that connected to the propeller.
In the experiment, me and Suchitra connected the little straw to the string that was taped on each end of the two chairs we used. Then, we wound the propeller to get the rubber band nice and tight. We tried to find out how many winds it would take to get the plane from one chair to the other. When we tried the experiment, we found out that it took 26 winds of the propeller to fly the length of the line. In our next experiment with the little plane, we tried to find out how many winds it took to get halfway down the length of the line. We guessed 15 and we were right! In the final experiment, me and Suchitra tried to find out what rubber bands were faster, we tried a combo of a thick yellow rubber band and another thick yellow rubber band and we made the record in our class:)
Something I learned in this experiment was that when I thought that thinner rubber bands would be faster, thicker rubber bands were like lightning. I am very happy with the plane experiment and there are still more experiments to test.
